If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes
It was after John’s arrest that Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the Gospel of God, saying, “The time has come at last—the kingdom of God has arrived. You must change your hearts and minds and believe the good news.” Mark 1:14-15
Here is another classic story that is worth reading again.
Autobiography in 5 short chapters
Chapter One:
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in. I am lost… I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to get out.
Chapter Two:
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again.
I cannot believe I am in the same place, but it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.
Chapter Three:
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see the hole is there.
I still fall in… it’s a habit, but my eyes are open.
I know where I am, and it is my fault.
It takes less time to get out.
Chapter Four:
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I precariously walk around it.
Chapter Five:
I walk down another street.
None of us can expect to continue to do the same thing we’ve always done and get a different result. The above parable states this eloquently. If you can identify with the words of the parable then perhaps you are ready to hear the message Jesus proclaimed about God’s kingdom. Access into the kingdom requires that we believe and that we change. The Bible word we often encounter is the word “repent,” which simply means to change your mind. The next time you climb out of the same hole, then perhaps Jesus is the street you want to go down. After all, he is the way, the street, the path to God.
