We are all probably familiar with the title of this entry as it applies to our military and the freedom we enjoy in our country. The spilled blood of patriots and soldiers along the way has paid the high cost of freedom. Thank You to the courageous men and women who have or who are currently serving our country.
Long before the formation of our nation, blood was shed so that each of us could enjoy a life of freedom. Jesus gave his life on the cross to pay the price of our sin. By putting our faith in the accomplished work of Jesus we access His grace and are unshackled. We are free to live the abundant life we were created to enjoy:
“Jesus answered, “I assure you that everyone who sins is a slave to sin… Therefore, if the Son make you free, you really will be free.” John 8:34, 36
Jesus is the only one who is capable to free us, and his help is exclusive. In the Galatians letter, Paul is writing to a group of folks who initially accepted the message (salvation by grace through faith) and then decided to “improve” on the gospel by adding some other requirements. In short they attempted to exchange grace for works of merit and Paul reminds them of the following:
“Christ has set us free for freedom. Therefore, stand firm and don’t submit to the bondage of slavery again.”
The price for our freedom was paid by Jesus on His cross. We can only receive it as a gift and any attempt to add to or take away from his work prohibits our capacity to accept the gift.
So I hope you enjoy a nice cook-out today and some excititng fireworks tonight and are able to take the time to give thanks to the one who offers true freedom.
